setting up your IP camera

Many people have asked me how they can view their IP Camera(s) away from home.
They can view over wifi but can't view over 3g because their ISP keeps changing their wan ip address.

Remember, addresses starting with 192.x.x.x and 10.x.x.x are internal ip addresses and are not route-able over the internet (just about every house/business uses those addresses).

See the steps below to setup with a free dynamic dns service like afraid.org.

Alternatively, if you prefer to do things manually, see the steps below for:

1. Make sure you can view your IP Camera from inside your house using a web browser. For example, "http://192.168.1.23". If your camera is using DHCP then you'll have to check your router for which IP address it is using (or use the manufacturer's tool to find the camera).

2. If your camera is using DHCP, then setup your router so that it always gives the same static IP address for the camera based on it's MAC address (will be visible from the router). Alternatively, you can just set the camera to a 192.x.x.x IP that is outside the range of the DHCP range.

3. Now that your camera has a static IP address visible from inside your house, you need to make it visible from outside the house. Setup your router to allow port forwarding from a high port like 10123 on it's external interface to the camera's IP address and port 80. See http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/ for more details. Once this step is done, you can now access your camera from outside using the external ip and port 10123. Use this tool to verify: http://canyouseeme.org

4. Most internet service providers now give out dynamic IP addresses to your router so next, you need to use a dynamic dns service so people outside can locate your router (and camera). I use http://freedns.afraid.org but there are many others that are free also (i.e. http://duckdns.org). Basically, I configure the router to report it's external IP address to the afraid.org any time it's IP address changes. Afraid.org associates an address like "mycam.dyndns.org" to my router's IP address.

5. Finally, make sure you can now view the camera using a browser from the outside (try a friend's house). For example, "http://mycam.dyndns.org:10123"

6. Great, now configure IP Cam Viewer to see your camera(s) once and your cameras will come up when the app is launched.

ps. Some cameras come with a built-in "dynamic dns" hostname but that is often a cheap http redirect and NOT a true dynamic dns. You can tell my putting the url to access the camera into a browser and if it changes to a numeric IP address, then it just did a cheap http redirect. The app supports some proprietary camera http redirect services but it's best to use a real dynamic dns.

If you have an USB camera, then you need install a program on your computer to stream the USB webcam.
You can try http://www.webcamxp.com or http://www.yawcam.com for Windows, or http://www.evological.com/evocam.html for Apple.

Once the USB webcam is available using a browser, then following the same steps as an IP camera to get that camera available from the internet.
In the IP Cam Viewer app for Android, select the "WebcamXP" or "Yawcam", or "EvoCam" type.

For iOS devices, try the "ipCam - Mobile IP Camera" app (the driver for this app is listed under the "iOS" brand).

For Android devices, try the "IP Webcam" app by Pas (the driver for this app is listed under the "Android" brand).

You can try http://www.webcamxp.com or http://www.yawcam.com for Windows, or http://www.evological.com/evocam.html for Apple.

Once the USB webcam is available using a browser, then following the same steps as an IP camera to get that camera available from the internet.
In the IP Cam Viewer app for Android, select the "WebcamXP" or "Yawcam", or "EvoCam" type.

I have WebcamXP v5.x running on Windows Vista. I can happily access my webcam's remotely via web browser, but IP Cam Viewer (paid version) always says it failed to get an image. I've never been able to successfully talk to my webcamxp cameras with IP Cam Viewer on Android 1.6 (HTC Magic) or 2.1 (Nexus One)...over wifi or mobile data. The address it uses is "http://[ip-address]:8989/1" for camera 1. I have two cameras (MS Lifecam VX3000 and Logitech Notecam 3500 (something like that). It can't see either of them via IP Cam Viewer set to WebcamXP and with all correct details supplied. The only detail I'm not sure of is the number to put in the for the camera. I've tried 0,1 and 2.

Any idea what's going wrong? I have supplied the correct userid and password, too, of course.

NOTE: Works fine in any web browser, including any web browser (default or Dolphin or Opera 5 Mini) on my Nexus One phone. But I'd like to see it in IP Cam Viewer as it is one of the reasons I bought the app.

Hello everyone, I have installed the light version to try it out but I am having a lot of trouble with it. I dont have a dynamic ip so I had set up a dyndns account. I had no problems with eagleyes on my iPhone but for some reason I cant get this to work. Any help would be great!

I get the error "failed to retrieve image from camera"

I even tested my dyndns url on my phones web and it went in (just couldn't view the images)

Hello there,

I seem to be having the same problem that one of the earlier posters had; I can see the cam images perfectly from any and all remote browsers, including my Nexus One (not on WiFi, on 3G), however I can't access the image from IP Cam Lite. Any thoughts?

Also, I would love to upgrade to the full version (assuming we can get the regular version to work in the first place), however as I am on Froyo with my N1, I can't see the full version on the Market in order to buy it. Now I know I can also upgrade from within the Lite version, however for the life of me I cannot figure out how. Any chance someone could point this out to me? Thanks!

Hey N4S. I have a AIc250 and have been for a while trying to configure it with no result. 1)I am able to look at it from another computer through its ip 2) but cant get the port forwarding thing straightened out.....Could you tell me about the part you say about 10123 to an external interface.
