Problem with last IP Cam Viewer update

Hi,

I've been using this app for a week and it's great, works perfectly on my HTC hero. However I installed an update today and I think it changed one feature I really found useful.

I own a Panasonic BL series cam, and on the cameras homepage settings I can choose between 3 default stream resolutions (640x480, 320x240, 192x144). If I choose 640x480 on my homepage, when I open IP Cam Viewer it will also display at 640x480 but due to the larger stream it will only show a frame every 3 seconds or so. If I set it to 192x144, IP Cam Viewer displays at the lower resolution allowing it to stream smooth, full motion video. I was keeping my default stream set at 192x144 to receive full video, then If I wanted a cleaner looking shot I would switch it to 640x480. But now after today's update it only displays at 640x480 no matter what default setting I choose on the cameras homepage.

I there any way to have IP Cam Viewer display the default camera resolution?

Ok, here's what happened.

I recently changed the panasonic drivers to request a resolution just higher than the android phone.
For example, if you have a small android pulse, then it'll request 320x240. If your phone's resolution is above 320x240, then it'll asked for the next available resolution which is 640x480.

I didn't realize you were actually changing the quality with your camera's settings. If I don't ask for the right resolution, then small phones will get MORE resolution than it needs and will be slow. If I let you control the resolution, most users will use the default of 320x240 and get lower resolution than normal (but faster if not on fast network).

What to do... Anyone else want to place their vote?

Here's what I've done to compensate for the uptick in resolution causing slower refresh:

It now checks the response time on the very first retrieval. If response time is slow, then it drops the resolution request (by half).
After the first check, it will then switch into mjpeg streaming.

So, if you have a panasonic bb/bl series camera, the quality and refresh rate will vary based on the network speed on first retrieval.
This will go into the 1/29/2010 (Friday) release unless someone else has a brighter idea.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply!

Maybe after the initial speed check, there could then be the option to have it stream at the default settings chosen on the homepage? It was nice being able to switch between all three settings.

Will wait for Fridays update either way and thanks again for the great app it's probably the best app I've bought on my phone so far!

Working awesome after the last update! I can see it switching now between 640 & 320 depending on my connection speed, and both resolutions are streaming twice as fast as they were on the last version so I'm getting full video now :mrgreen: thanks a lot for the great app

Thanks for the kinds words and encouragement. There's more goodness coming so hold on (i.e. 2 way audio support is high on the list). First, I have to finish my backlog of small enhancements/additions.

I have a TrendNet TV-IP422W with two-way Audio, Would really love to use that feature, at least one way audio

I've been having a problem since the last update relating to this. I have a Panasonic Bl series cam as well. My phone is a Motorola Droid which has a screen thats like 800x400 res, so the 640x480 res is much clearer on it than 320x240. As far as refresh rate, I don't really care if it takes a couple seconds to update. Now it won't stay at 640x480 for more than a second or 2 before switching down to 320x240. How to I disable this downshift so it stays at 640x480? Thanks

oy bay... I might have to make it a configurable option in the "App Settings" to accomodate differences in user preference. I'll put it on the todo list. thx rob

Ok, in the next release, there's a new option in the "App Settings" called "Prefer image quality over refresh speed".
Check this option and it won't drop quality if network is slow. The default is to prefer speed.

It should be released this Friday 2/5/2010
